4 Ways to Brighten Up Your Living Room

4 Ways to Brighten Up Your Living Room

Whereas some people just have an eye for interior design, it’s worth remembering the fact that not everybody is a professional designer and decorating and furnishing the interior of a home is nowhere near as easy as the TV shows, or social media, would have you believe.

When it comes down to the interior of our homes however, particularly our living rooms, everybody has a different style and a different aesthetic in mind. Some people want a minimalistic approach to their living rooms, whereas others may prefer a busier, more rustic look. How you design and furnish your living room is entirely down to you, but it never hurts to get a little help and advice now and then either.

There is no right or wrong way to decorate and furnish a living room, but if you want to liven things up and give your living area a more warming, welcoming, and homely feel, here’s a look at 4 tips guaranteed to get the job done.

Add a rustic charm with wood

Whereas glass and PVC furniture were all the rage a few years ago, wood is now very much back in fashion and is very much the material of choice when it comes to our furniture.

Wooden furniture is easy to clean, it polishes up incredibly well, it can be as warm or as dark as you like (depending on which wood you choose) and it is just classy and timeless and lends itself perfectly to any interior and any form of interior design.

As far as material goes, mango wood is especially popular as it is durable and hardwearing. To really give your living room a welcoming feel, how about this brown square solid mango wood coffee table for when you’re relaxing in an evening enjoying a glass of wine or a coffee, decaf of course.

Decide on your furniture

Okay, so we’ve established that wooden furniture works incredibly well for creating a welcoming and homely environment, but what kind of wooden furniture do you need? Well, of course you can have coffee tables, and TV stands, but what else?

When choosing the furniture for your living room, decide on which style of décor you’re going for. If you want a contemporary and minimalistic room, less is more. For a more rustic feel you might want slightly more items like an woven sideboard, a cabinet, or even solid oak tall chest of drawers.

The furniture you purchase will depend on your style and your belongings, so be sure to consider these before you commit to buying.

Add space with a mirror

If your living room is a little “snug” as an estate agent would say, if you do want to create the illusion of more space, a large mirror as a centrepiece on your wall could be ideal.

If you’ve a feature wall, perhaps above a fireplace, a large mirror will not only draw your eye, it will also make the room appear larger than it is.

While you can go with any style you like, as baroque is very much in fashion at the moment, a black-framed baroque style mirror as the centrepiece of your room will work wonderfully.

Switch up your upholstery

When talking about living room furniture, you of course cannot forget about seating.

When choosing your upholstery for your living room however, we recommend switching things up rather than keeping things the same. If you opt for 2 sofas and an armchair for example, don’t be afraid to get 2 different styles of sofa and a different armchair, rather than all 3 in the same style.

Matching upholstery can work, but so can different types of upholstery. Choose colours that compliment each other and tie everything in with cushions and throws in similar colours, styles, and patterns.
